Get into the back country of Northland. With a ever-changing landscape and lots of unsealed roads this is one of our favourite 4X4 tours. Follow the trail the British troops took in 1846 to reach Ruapekapeka Pā, the Māori fortifications, and the site of the last battle of the Northland wars. Visit the Taikirau wetlands where native and introduced bird life can be seen. Pass through pine tree plantations to see one of Northland’s major industries up close and also explore the Opua Forest on a 20-minute walk. Here you can see the magnificent kauri trees and native bush along a well-formed trail.
Includes a stop at a historic tavern where you can purchase a lunch and a cold beverage before we hit the next of the unsealed roads on our trek.
The Jeeps or Toyota 4X4 can cater for up to four passengers each. If both of our guides are available, we can cater for groups of up to eight. Simply book two tours and you can swap between vehicles on the day if you want.
We pickup from the Paihia Wharf Maritime Building car park, cruise ship tender jetty, or if preferred, from your local accommodation in Paihia, Opua or Russell. Request location at time of booking.
